Embodied Learning Systems

Embodied Learning Systems are a set of practices that are body positive and based in active learning rather than diagnosis, treatment, or "self-improvement".

Alexander Technique, the root practice, and Mobile Body Alignment™, my combination of somatics, dance, and Alexander Technique, are step-by-step awareness and movement practices that help you feel more powerful and at ease in your body.

You’ll enjoy the experience - because learning happens best when there is a feeling of safety and an atmosphere of play. You will be surprised at how adaptable, mobile, and responsive your own body is.

Aches and pains go away as my students learn to trust their own physical intelligence. So many problems get resolved when their learning relationship with their own body is restored.

Yes, you will find relief from pain and stress. Yes, scientific research is increasingly proving the efficacy of the Alexander Technique. Yes, The Alexander Technique, the basis of all my practices, is proven to do the following:

But getting relief is not empowering if you don’t know how it happened and you can’t bring it about in yourself when you are on your own. Learning about your body is healing in a way that diagnosis and treatment are not.

In fact, combined with medical treatment or psychotherapy, Embodied Learning Systems triple the value of your initial investment because they bring your mind and body into loving conversation.

Embodied Learning Systems are maps that will guide you on the journey towards better postural support, healing, and empowerment:

1. The Alexander Technique: This 150 year old method for improving postural tone has many direct and indirect benefits. Posture is how you support your body in relationship to gravity, and it’s a constant influence on you all day and all night. It supports your movement and balance systems, and calibrates all other systems in your body such as breathing, circulation, digestion, and perception.

Some of us have low postural tone, and some of us have too much, or too much in the wrong places because of pain or learned habits. We can sort it out for you in private lessons.

2. Mobile Body Alignment helps you apply the Alexander principles in movement. By learning the 6 Awareness Preludes and the 17 Mobile Body Alignment Points you cultivate flexibility of attention to self and environment.

Most of us are spending too much time in states of narrow, fixed focus and this affects how we feel in our bodies and how we move. Mobile Body Alignment will free you to be mindful while in motion or activities that may have been tension producing in the past.

3.   Mobile Body Alignment Dermatome Mapping All spinal (and some cranial) nerves carry sensation from a particular area of skin to the brain. Learning this beautiful map experientially refreshes your body image, activates the central nervous system with calm and ease through contact with your skin, and establishes an expansive three-dimensional sense of wholeness that integrates easily into your movement.

4.   Mobile Body Alignment Cranial Nerve Sequencing: Re-establish your innate capacity to balance activation and calm by learning the structure and function of all 12 cranial nerves, including the vagus. Improve underlying breathing patterns, decrease eye strain, improve your voice, posture, and digestion by relinquishing deep excess tension nerve by nerve.

All these practices facilitate long term mobility into old age, positive body image, self-knowledge, self-care, and independence.
